In late December of last year, Serena Williams announced that she was engaged to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. To make the announcement, Williams posted a poem about her engagement story to—can you guess it?—Reddit. At Williams’s bridal shower yesterday, Reddit made yet another not-so-surprising appearance in this engagement story line.
Williams’s three sisters, mom, and several close friends attended her lavish bridal shower last Friday, per People. The celebration activities included relaxing in the ocean and spending the evening in the “Retreat Collection” of the 1 Hotel and Homes South Beach, which was decorated with two very recognizable piñatas: Reddit versions of Williams and Ohanian.
Where are the tennis balls, you ask? The rackets, the Wimbledon whites? Surely this internationally recognized tennis champion would acknowledge her own stellar career in her wedding, not just her future husband’s? Perhaps Williams—who won the Australian Open in January while eight weeks pregnant—knows her accomplishments are already impressive enough. For now, it seems the Reddit decor is preferred for these upcoming nuptials.
The bridal shower seemed to follow the traditional tenets of a pre-wedding celebration: surf and sun included. Per People, Williams and her pals spent the morning in a meditation class, complete with foot massages, before heading off to a private yacht for a cruise around Miami.
