The strike action embarked upon by the labour in Nasarawa State has suffered a setback as Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees( NULGE) the youth council and the National Union of Roads Transport Workers (NURTW) have backed out of the industrial action.
While the Nasarawa State Chapter of NULGE has advised its members not to join
the strike, the youth council said that the action of NLC was ill
motivated.
NULGE has advised its members not to join the strike action embarked upon by the state chapter of the Nigerian labour Congress ( NLC ).
A statement by the state president of the Union, Comrade Abdullahi Abubakar in Lafia, the state capital said the strike action was not in the best interest of the local government workers.
Abubakar said local government workers have since before now been paid in percentages and have come to terms with the reality in the country over the economic situation.
"The issue of percentage has been part of LG and after due consultation we were made to understand the reality that the economic situation has changed.
"So the national headquarters of our great union has advised that we maintain the status quo until the economic situation improves".
"So I am calling on local government workers across the state to resume work after Sallah break and anybody who fails to do so will be held responsible for going against the civil service rules and regulations.
He said the union has not directed anybody to embark on strike but rather to celebrate the Sallah and return to work immediately after the festivity.
He added that no amount of pressure will make government do otherwise because of the present economic reality in the country.
The state president of the Nigerian Youth Council, Muhammad Bako Shaibu in a press conference said the state government has done enough and needed support rather than condemnation.
He advised the labour to call off the strike as youths are not in support of their action.
He said that the issue of salaries was a national one that is not applicable to Nasarawa State alone and urged NLC in the state to always sensitize their members .
On his part, Salisu Adamu, state chairman of NURTW said members of the union are progressives and would not join the strike which he said is old fashioned.
Adamu, who was accompanied by over 3000 of his members to pay Sallah homage to governor Umaru Tanko Almakura in Government House Lafia, said the labour in the state was living in the past and needed some guidance to understand the reality of the situation in the country.
He then called on the state civil servants to always rally around the state government to achieve a common goal that will move the state forward.
